How to Start Your Kids In Music

So many parents want their kids to experience music early, and as a music teacher in El Paso, TX, I totally support it! But as a mom of two, I understand the risks and worries of parents who are getting their kids into music lessons. Here are some things to consider about kids and music!

What are the Benefits to Learning Music Young?

First, learning music at a young age is so helpful. With my own kids, I start teaching musical intervals as they learn to count, at just 2-4 years old! Learning music young can open doors to group experiences, like bands and musicals, or even other instruments. It can also help your young children gain confidence in themselves, which is one of the most important parts of my job as a music teacher for kids!

At What Age Should My Child Get Music Lessons?

So many parents want to know when their child should start private lessons. My youngest students in formal piano lessons are about five years old—which is actually how old I was when I started playing! I think five is as young as you should start, and older kids with more interest will do even better!

Your child in music lessons will have to be able to sit still for 30 minutes at a time, and needs to be big enough to carry or play their instrument.  They will also need to have the ability to love and practice their instrument with little help from parents!

Finding Kid-friendly Lessons

So where to find kid-friendly lessons? When you’re searching for a music teacher, make sure you ask if they have experience with children. It’s always helpful to have a trial lesson so you can see if long-term lessons are right for your child!
